Our Story

Almost 100 years of serving quality and leadership in Philippine food

It all started in 1890

San Miguel Foods traces its beginnings back to 1890 as Southeast Asia’s first brewery, La Fabrica de Cerveza San Miguel, which became San Miguel Corporation (SMC) in 1964. The company’s success in beer became the springboard for the launch of a variety of food categories.

Expanding into the food industry

San Miguel Corporation ventured in the food industry with Magnolia Ice Cream in 1925. This was followed by its entry into the livestock industry with B-MEG Feeds in 1953 and Magnolia Chicken in 1972.

In the 1990s, SMC acquired Monterey Farms, Star Margarine and Dari Crème brands. All these products - ice cream, animal feeds, chicken, pork, beef and spreads carried the San Miguel stamp of high quality.

Growth Momentum

San Miguel Corporation acquired Pure Foods Corporation in 2001 and renamed it San Miguel Pure Foods Company, Inc. Through this acquisition, San Miguel entered the flour industry and expanded its presence in feeds, poultry and processed meats, the latter through The Purefoods Hormel Company, Inc., a joint venture with Hormel Foods International.

In 2003, San Miguel acquired a hog farming, feeds and processed meats business in Vietnam.

In 2004, San Miguel Pure Foods relaunched Magnolia milk and Ice cream and debuted in the coffee industry via a joint venture with Super Coffeemix Manufacturing Ltd in 2005.

In 2013, SMC completed construction of the Golden Bay Grain Terminal, a world-class efficient, fully-automated grain terminal.

A New Entity

In 2018, San Miguel Corporation consolidated San Miguel Brewery and Ginebra San Miguel Inc. into San Miguel Pure Foods Company and renamed it San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc., further expanding opportunities for synergy among the three businesses.

There were three divisions under this newly created entity: San Miguel Foods, which is the food division, San Miguel Brewery, for beer and non-alcoholic beverages, and Ginebra San Miguel, the world’s largest gin producer by volume as well as the market leader in the domestic hard liquor market.

Today, San Miguel Foods is one of the largest and most diversified food companies in the Philippines. Owning a portfolio of products and brands loved by millions, the company has built a name that’s synonymous to fresh, safe to eat, and great-tasting food, offering convenience and value for money for Filipino families.

First meat-free product line

San Miguel Foods introduced its first vegetarian line of “meat-free” products in July 2020. Called “Veega,” the products included nuggets, sausages, ground meat analogue, balls, and burger patties, made with plant-based protein.

By late 2021, the company expanded its offerings to meat-free versions of Pinoy favorites - Adobo Flakes, Tapa and Tocino, as well as Korean staples but meat-free Bulgogi and Spicy Soy Garlic Balls.

Food Security for every Filipino

San Miguel Foods embarked on a massive expansion program in 2016 with the goal of bolstering food security in the country. Since then, the company has built seven new feedmills, one flour mill, one ready-to-eat plant, two processed meats plants, and several new warehouses and cold storage facilities. In 2020, San Miguel Foods broke ground on a mega poultry facility in Davao which will eventually house world-class climate-controlled broiler houses and a poultry processing plant, designed to be a model for several more mega poultry facilities to be set up all over the country.
