Portion control made practical: Eating well without giving up the food you love

Why understanding portions, not avoiding food, is key to balanced and sustainable nutrition

What should we portion?

Portion awareness isn’t limited to just rice or meat consumption. It can apply to different components of a meal.

Here’s a practical approach you can consider:

1. Rice and other carbohydrates
Rice is a staple in Filipino meals and an important source of energy. Rather than eliminating rice, consider the amount appropriate for your needs and balance it with other components of your meal.

2. Protein sources
Fish, eggs, meat, poultry, beans, and other protein sources help support growth, repair, and daily body functions. Choose an appropriate portion and vary your protein sources throughout the week.

3. Vegetables and fruits
These provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients. Make vegetables a regular and substantial part of meals and include fruits as convenient snacks or part of meals.

4. Foods higher in fat, sugar, or sodium
These foods can still be part of everyday eating when consumed in appropriate amounts and balanced with other foods. Paying attention to portions of these can help manage overall intake without requiring complete avoidance.

5. Beverages and snacks
Portion awareness should also extend beyond main meals. Sugary drinks, desserts, and snacks can add significant energy to the diet, especially when consumed frequently or in large amounts.

Portion control is also about sustainability

Creating healthy eating practices that families can afford, accept, and continue throughout their lives, is sustainable. It does not have to mean buying expensive “health foods” or following complicated meal plans. Rather, it is about making the most of locally available ingredients, familiar dishes, and affordable sources of essential nutrients, while being mindful of portion sizes.

Portion control also helps reduce food waste. Serving only what the family can reasonably consume and properly storing leftovers can help households make better use of available food, avoid unnecessary waste, and stretch their food budget further.

The goal: Balance, not perfection

Portion control is not about counting every bite or feeling guilty about enjoying favorite foods.

It is about asking simple questions:

How much do I need? What nutrients does this food provide? And how does it fit into the rest of my meal and my day?

When portion awareness is combined with food variety, nutrient-dense choices, and mindful eating, healthy eating becomes less restrictive and more about balance.

For Filipino families, this may be the most practical way forward: Enjoy the foods we love, understand the portions we need, and build meals that nourish both people and the communities around us.

Always remember, healthy eating does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with simply knowing how much is enough.

With busy schedules, family responsibilities, and countless food choices available every day, it can be easy to put nutrition and wellness on the back burner. We may know what a balanced lifestyle looks like, but putting it into practice is another story. The good news? Healthy living does not have to mean making drastic changes. Sometimes, it starts with simply pausing and asking ourselves: How well am I taking care of my nutrition and overall well-being?

For many Filipinos, the airport is more than just a place to catch a flight. It marks the start of long-awaited vacations, emotional homecomings or important business trips. In the middle of the rush, food can offer a welcome pause, providing travelers with a sense of familiarity before they head to their next destination. At the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), passengers can find familiar Filipino flavors through food concepts that bring together well-loved meals and favorite street food snacks.

With so much nutrition information available today, choosing what to eat can sometimes feel overwhelming. Food labels, health claims, social media posts, and nutrition advice can all influence the way we see and choose our food. The good news? Making better food choices does not require following complicated rules. It starts with understanding the information available and putting it into context. Being food-informed means looking beyond simple claims, asking thoughtful questions, and considering how each food fits into your overall eating pattern.

Food is fuel—but not all diets are the same. A person going about daily life has very different nutrition needs than an athlete training hard every day. Understanding these differences can help you eat smarter, stay healthy, and perform your best.
